Frederick M. Alexander was an Australian actor in the late 19th century and he started to have serious problems with the loss of his voice when he was on stage. By a process of very detailed observation of himself in mirrors he realised that he had habits of tightening his head, neck and throat which restricted his breathing and caused his voice to lose the capacity to project. Once he had made this observation he started to help others with with similar problems with their breathing. He moved to London with many recommendations of the benefits to be gained from his ways of helping clients with breathing and respiratory issues. As time went by, the way he helped his clients changed. With guidance from his hands he increasingly worked worked out ways of helping people to ease their general patterns and habits of movement.
